What are people doing with the raw avi files copied from a DV camera. each hour is about 13MB in size, do these need to be archved as they are for future use or is it good enough to author them to a DVD and then get rid of them.

    TIA

DV is not raw; it is still compressed. For actual raw avi's I would suggest something like winrar or compressing with a lossless codec.

Has anything changed in the last 2 years?
Yes. HDD's have gotten bigger and cheaper. HDDVD and BluRay weren't around either and I am not sure even double layer DVDR's were out back then.
