A guy is selling me his psp with (I believe he said) 3.02 custom firmware on it. Would I simply have to run the 3.40 oe-a installer and that is it? Is it pretty straightforward? It seems like I'd be less likely to screw up using the installer than copying files manually, but I'm just making sure I can use the installer right from the custom 3.02, or do I have to downgrade back to 1.5?

You can go straight from 3.xx to 3.40 oe-a no worries. Using an auto installer is uber lame, do it yourself and eliminate the brick factor.

In a sense yes, since it automates the process. I still wouldnt recommend doing that though. Takes 5 mins to upgrade to the latest OE doing it yourself. Why take a chance?
