I have an external atapi cd-rw 52x24x52 which I used in an attempt to burn pictures to 700MB memorex cd-rw cds.

However, no matter which program I seem to use (Nero Ultra, Alcohol 120 1.9.2.1705, or even the Windows XP writing wizard) I cannot complete this process successfully.

I'm not sure if it is a 1-sheep burner or not, because it even failed the sheep test (http://www.petemoore.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/guides/pc-cdrom/sheeptest.htm)
w/ nero after supposedly saying it got to 100%.

Here's a typical example of the classic windows xp writing wizard (which i had thought never failed) failing

Since the last time the burner worked I have only changed CDs (from PNY technologies to Memorex), installed alcohol, nero, and made a couple virtual drives.

However, digital research technologies cd (not rewritable) burned successfully. Any ideas?

    Hi,

If you're burning pictures the sheep rating is inconsequential.

If your drive isn't liking the memorex RW then I'd suggest updating the firmware and if that doesn't work I'd simply use a different brand of media :)

    Firmware:

    Hi,

ATAPI isn't the manufacturer it's the data interface :)

Is ATAPI what Nero Info Tools lists the drive as?

Well, in that case it's as generic as generic gets and I've no idea what firmware it would need.

It's possible an update to your ASPI could do some good. it may have been boogered up somehow. ForceASPI is a good one. Here's a link:

I did almost everything on that site--couldnt run the check program, but it seems to have installed.

    So what exactly is ASPI?

    Hi,

ASPI is a driver later that sits between your drive and your software that lets them communicate back and forth.

So ASPICHK wouldn't verify the install? That's very odd.

Have you tried another brand of media yet?

Can you post a Nero error log? That may give us some clues :)

they probably mistyped the link to the ASPI check program--they give a site that is identical to the ForceASPI 1.8 download site (above)

    Alrighty,

You're getting a session fixation error which can be caused by a couple things.

    1) Other software interfering with the burn process such as packet writing apps, Windows IMAPI burning service or an otherwise heavy load of other apps running in the background.

I noticed in your log that out of 479MB of RAM you only have 73MB available. How many apps do you have running while trying to burn (including those running in the background)?

    2) Again we need to look at the media. Have you tried any other media yet? Before the actual burn the drive will burn a small amount of the disc to calibrate itself for that particular disc and if the disc is low quality, dirty/scratched or otherwise bad the drive won't burn to it.

    3) Transfer problems. Since you're running an external drive I'd recommend updating your USB (or firewire) drivers and possibly your motherboards chipset drivers.

When I burn I usually only have a couple things open: Norton Antivirus 2004 and usr wlan (connection to my router)

How much memory do I need? Is the "ALI USB 2.0 v 1.52" a good usb update? (http://www.usbman.com/USB%202%20News.htm)

Recently I went through a step by step essential service guide for windows xp, leaving only the necessary services. Perhaps there were many that were eating away at my memory...

It looked to me like there was quite a bit of system memory being used.

Normally windows will use around 128MB depending on your configuration.

Have you run any spyware utilities such as Spybot S&D or Adaware? If you get loaded down with spyware and junk they can eat up resources and bog your system down.

I use Lavasoft Ad-Aware 6 all the time...I have nothing
my computer is pretty good in that department

I still have to make one more test, now that I disabled a bunch of useless services for xp. Since my burner can burn on 2 different types of CD-Rs and cannot burn on the Memorex CD-RW, I think the conclusion is that Memorex is simply not compatible w/ my burner...

    That could very well be.

If you try another brand of RW let us know how it goes :)

[edit] buffer lvl was at 84% this time... is that good? [/edit]
