I am hearing that there is a patch/crack that can be burnt right on to the backup disk that allows the 360 to recognize it. Is there anything to this or just a rumor?

Actually, where I heard about it was from the IT guy where I work. One of his IT guys gave him a patch and crack on a dvd. He told me that he has successfully backed up gears of war and that it played on a 360 console. I feel awkward asking him for it, but it had to come from somewhere. So I don't really have a link to show anyone.

It would surely be nice to know if it were in fcat true. It would save people from having to buy the equipment needed for flashing their console.
