From what I've been able to gather here, the only tools I would need to back up my DVD9 game with a non-modified PS2 is:

    1. HD Advance
    2. Eth. Adapter + Hard Drive (obvious)
    3. DVD Decrypter (or similar ripping app like Shrink)
    4. PC running NTFS OS to avoid file size problems
    5. PC to PS2 HD transfer software (HIIP, Dump, etc.)

Anything I'm missing? It would appear that some here are recommending using products and taking extra steps that are not necessarily to do the job (such as Apache, iml2iso, etc.), but are only necessary if you're burning a backup to actual DVD media.

What besides the above 5 would be absolutely necessary?

you need a PS2, but I'm sure you knew that!

I don't have a working HDD on my PS2, so i'm not sure, but i think you are right. If you are wondering how to back up San Andreas (DVD9), don't worry, almost every PS2 owner will get it, and somebody will find a way of backing it up for HD Loader.
