I started to use power dvd and took no notice about the 5 chance's for the region's, now I think I have locked the pioneer at region 2 and my Samsung reader at region 1 (could that stop me from writing a dvd from spruce up) can I do anything to put them back I have tried genie and region kill with no success
You can't use DVDgenie and other sw region spoofers to get around the hw region protection. You do this by re-writing the drives's firmware. Anyway, your drive is now locked to the region you mentioned. There are some utilities that let you resets this back. Only works 5 times, apparently. I haven't tried doing this.
