what is the best way to keep my wii from being bricked?
Don't play any out of region games at all on it then you should be fine. That's the simplest way. It's the out of region disks that cause semi-bricks when they are used to update.
It's not the only way cos you can play them as long as your Wii has been updated properly before you play them - that means only updating from the internet or from disks in your Wii's region.
would i be safe from bricking if i were to change region using regionfrii?
No - cos regionfrii just enables playback from any region. It doesn't do what brickblocker does which is stop your wii from updating from the disk. But if you only take updates from the internet or from disks in your region there's really no need to mess about with that stuff.
