Ok...... I purchased my Xbox 360 on March 1st, 2006. It began to freeze constantly, with a checkboard of black and red squares running through the screen sometime in the last week of February 2007. All of the warranties were extended one year, so I called immediately. I went through all the troubleshooting, and of course nothing worked. 8 of the 9 customer service people I got on the phone were foreign. I have heard that they have a customer service headquarters in India, also a small one in Texas near the repair center, I don't know. These people all sounded Hispanic. Point it, I could understand them about as well as they could understand me..... which means about 25% of all words spoken. Here's my dilema. They told me to ship them my console in Texas. Ok, that's fine. I shipped it a few days ago. I had to pay for shipping, and a box to ship it in, ugh, because not only did the people on the phone refuse to send me a box, but everyone else I read about online said it took 2 weeks to get there. I am still hoping to get my console back in under 2 weeks. Ok.... to the first problem....every single thread I read online says that EVERY SINGLE UNIT RECEIVED BACK FROM XBOX IS A REFURBISHED CONSOLE. I DON'T WANT A REFURBISHED CONSOLE. I took substantial care of my console. It was in excellent physical condition! I am really pissed. Also, you have no idea how many threads i've read from people whose first 360 broke, and every console they received back broke within days, until they are on #5 at least. I AM FREAKING OUT. It seems that if your first console breaks, you are caught in a cycle of receiving consoles that aren't yours, which are also broken, back in the mail. The biggest problem of all...... I CAN'T CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE TO BITCH THEM OUT BECAUSE THEY DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH!!!! I am still waiting completely inpatiently for my fixed console (AKA SOMEBODY ELSE'S PIECE OF CRAP REFURBISHED CONSOLE) to come in the mail. I was wondering if it is possible to buy an extended warranty on the console they send you back in the mail, because my brand new one that I took excellent, and I mean excellent care of, broke in 11 months. What's keeping the refurbished one from breaking 2 days after it's one month warranty? Is there a way to get your money back rather than a different system? After just one break, and based on hundreds and hundreds of reviews i've read of people getting caught up in this cycle of 5 refurbished systems from Microsoft, waiting 6 months without playing, once again, after just one break, i'm thinking of buying a wii and forgetting microsoft all together, even though I am completely over the top obsessed with Gears of War. Now...ok.... I am 15 years old. I don't have another 300 dollars to spend on a video game console. I'm saving for a car and for room and board in college, as i'm hoping my parents will pay the tuition. Now I would really like to know if you think the majority of refurbished consoles people receive in the mail actually are fixed, or if these thousands of people who have been through 5 consoles represent the highly dissatisfied consumer population. I think that if the console I receive back in the next couple weeks is not mine, and breaks right away, I will try to get a refund (which i'm guessing right now isn't possible) and not waste another 4 months going from console to console. Another interesting fact, I got a PS2 a couple months after they were released, some half a decade ago. I got a gamecube a couple of months after it's release some 4 years or so ago. I also got an original microsoft xbox (my fav. console of all 3) about a year after it came out. My PS2 was part of the first line of them, some of the earliest ones manufactured. IT STILLL WORKSSSSSSSSSS OMFG. ok.... My gamecube, STILLS WORKs PERFECTLY. ok.... the original xbox, BROKE 1 MONTH AFTER IT'S WARRANTY ENDED AND I HAD TO BUY A NEW ONE. I bought it a good 1 year after it's release, giving microsoft plenty more time than the other 2 consoles i bought from 2 other companys, to fix it's problems. 3 Systems, now 4. 2 of them broke- xbox and xbox 360. Like I said earlier, it appears to me, based on everything ive read online, that if your first one breaks, you will not get a new one, or a correctly functioning one. I would like to know from you if it is possible to buy an extended warranty on the one i will get in the mail. Because if not, and the next one breaks, I don't know what i'm gonna do. I spent 5 years playing the ps2, gamecube, and xbox. I am sick of them, and now that new technology, with better everything (obviously except reliability) is out, all my friends and cousins play it and I want to too. I don't see how I could ever possibly give up on the 360 because Gears of War is my favorite game ever made, and I go on xbox live 5 times a week, but and I don't have another 300 to spend.

You could have tried fixing it yourself. The reason they break is because the board warps due to heat. Its a very poor design flaw. The heat sink and CPU are fastened to the board with inflexable clamps. Board gets hot, only it cant flex properly, it warps and the CPU or GFX chip comes away from its solder points. Bad design flaw, however, MS properly wouldnt have seen it coming, because it can over a year or even 2 years of regular use for it to happen. Did you ever have an attached fan or intercooler on your 360?

Nope, no fan. I was looking into them before it broke, but all of the fans got like 2 starts out of 5 on amazon.com. Apparently, the fans broke something internally on almost everyone's 360, which voided their warranty.

Well I have had an intercooler on mine since I got it and no problems. Anything that will keep it a bit cooler to stop the board warping.

i just started going thru the same thing last week...my screen started freezing. i was playing call of duty 3 online...i mainly just play the multiplayer part of the games..nothing else. i am so bummed..plus my warranty ran out. i bitched about paying 139 to fix it not including shipping..so they knocked off 25% like i read in other blogs..B.S. anyways..so i have to pay $104 to get like you said...a refurbished one..but it comes with the original 90 day warranty...so that's good..and you can buy a year warranty later thru the 1-800 number for 29.99 which i plan on doing...it's 59.99 for two years..i'm addicted to the call of duty multiplayer game so i'm willing to take it in the backside this time..but next time..i'm paying the extra money at bestbuy to get their warranty..i believe they will replace it no questions asked...i think..i hope..if they do..i'll pay it. sorry about your luck..moongrasp@hotmail.com

So uh, if the board warps due to bad solder techniques/materials; what can you do to fix it? I started with the checkers, then moved up to the three red lights of doom; moved on to the towel trick, got another fifteen minutes of play; and now I get black screens after a small amount of play on it. I agree that it's very likely what's happened to mine.... But how do I fix it?

Oh, and uh, If I seem slightly incoherent right now, I do apologize. Last night was St. Patrick's day, and rather than waking up with a hangover; I woke up still pretty drunk.

lmao at the drunk part, but best recommendation, get new fans for the inside and take the side grills off to keep it cool and then do the towel trick and hope it fixes it and the new fans keep it cool enough to prevent stuff from messing up.

I'm kind of considering a more major case mod for this, more major than anything I've done, to give it a LOT more air; but that's only if I can get it to friggin' work again, for now, I'm retrying the towel method for a twenty minute sitting. The system is already broke. So it's not like I can lose much, so long as I make sure it doesn't catch fire, lol.

    y don't u try this:

if ur 360 is keep coming back refurb then buy another one from walmart and put this shit in that box so that walmart will get it returned again when someone buys it and says it f**ked up and then they will ship it to microsoft who will have to do something about it cuz its their console.

    Okay; here's an amusing case:

I had the power supply in the same place as the 360, behind the system, a little less than a foot away. The spot was open, and very accessible for airflow. I was reading that for some people, the power supply actually causes the system to overheat, so I moved it to the very top of my entertainment center; away from everything else.

I then turned on the system, and loaded up my save for Crackdown. One minute later; I had a nice, weird flashing checker screen. Good times.

So, I went to do the towel thing longer, as I mentioned; but things got interesting here. Without the power supply being there; I had to put a disc in and start a game, because after 15 minutes, the towel was still about room temperature; this was not the case while the power supply was there. So, I loaded up Crackdown(This game has been running during more crashes, freezes, and red light errors than any other title I own!) And um.... The system is still just over room temperature, and between my wife and I, we've played around two hours. in one sitting. And yet I couldn't make it run more than a few minutes before.

I'm not planning to just keep running it with a towel on it; but I can't figure out why only now it runs stable for the first time in a couple weeks.

I understand the technical reasons behind why running the system with a towel on it can help; but I'm shocked that by running the system with a towel, the system isn't getting hot; but is running better than it has in a long time...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I'm sure the heat is causing a connection to stay on that was not, it's just an odd situation. Anyways, I'm still a bit... less than sober, as I've mentioned earlier, so I'm probably rambling on.... But I hope someone might have some helpful input. I'm still great with electronics, etc even though I'm in this state, I just tend to get repetitive like you wouldn't believe(Unless you're reading this, lol).

    So..... Yeah. Thoughts? Comments?
