You can't play an .avi file directly on a dvd player, or an mpeg file either for that matter unless it is a properly-formatted White-book-standard vcd-type mpeg-1 file (or svcd for *some* dvd players), and burned onto the disc using proper vcd formatting software. (Nero; EZ CD-Creator; Sony Extreme, etc.)

I've downloaded .avi clips, (and made dvd-to-divx.avi files); converted them to mpeg-1 vcd files with TMPEnc; burned them with Sony (Prassi) CD-Extreme software, and they play back fine.
