I cannot get a disc to complete burning in Nero 6. I've attempted bruing some of my own video files as well as files I've backed up. I was able to copy a disc from a recent successful burn but, I cannot seem to successfully burn files from my hard drive as well as files I recently added to the hard drive today. I've defragmented that did not work, so tried uninstalling and re-installing Nero, same deal. I've been told in these forums in the past to update my firmware but the only firmware available is generic and since the drive has worked fine in the past I saw no reason to update. I was also recommended to use this version of Nero 6 as well, as it more stable than the most recent update to nero 6. The log history file is below, please help.

    Hi militantm
1st thing I'd edit out your name and serial # in these logs.
The serial # is at the top of each log along w/ your name and begins w/ 1A.

In the 2 failed logs your getting these errors - Reset occurred
    & KEY_UNIT_ATTENTION
These could mean the drive itself or something is conflicting.
Anything change pc wise since you were last able to burn?

Try another burn program. Here's a good free one - ImgBurn. Use the build mode to add the files to burn.

    2x is a bit too slow for 16x media - try 4x but I'd try 8x.

Here's the latest firmware for the drive - A114 from 9/05. I'd update it may help. One thing it does is update the media codes to give the drive the proper write strategy. The is especially good for newer media like 16x.

thanks binkie7 I may have posted the wrong log I have recently edited my post, can you please take a look again. here's the log, I hope posting it twice isn't overkill. I have been pointed to that firmware update in the past. are you positive thats the correct one for my burner? I've be hesitent about firmware updates, Ive heard it diffcult to tell exactly which drive sony put in the vaio I have and I don't want to screw up my drive. fyi I can't burn faster than 2x with this drive and I've had great results with these 16x verbatim in the past as recently as this past weekend. I burned like 6 or 7 in row successfully then I started hitting the process failed error so as I mentioned I resorted to copying one of the succsessfully burned discs directly from one drive to the burner and no problems. today I attempted to burn some vob I had backed up on the hard drive and same crap burn proccess failed. this is log is from the vob's I attempted to burn after re installing nero.

Not much of a difference in the logs - just the errors on the ones that fail - reset and key unit attention.

Oops sorry about suggesting 8x - 4x is max on this drive.
You can try the firmware update - the one I listed is for oem drives which this one is.

The drive is older and is probably on it's way out so I would try the update. But personally I think your best bet may be to pick up a new drive. They are so much cheaper now.

Give ImgBurn a shot to make sure not some sort of conflict with Nero.

Yeah that firmware is a little funky looking there.
Try the A113 - not as new but may help some.

Here's a link on your drive for others that had problems w/ it - link

I did have successful burn today but, another coaster right behind it. same deal in the log too, reset occurred. I tried cleaning the lens and I'm not sure what effect it had since a good one then a bad one. think that intermitent behavior is sign the drive is crapping out? I still don't get why it will copy from one disc to another but not from files on the hard disk.

Yep intermittent could be the drive.
The media id for the 16x verbs which gives the drive the proper write strategy is probably not loaded in the firmware. So the drive will use a generic write strategy and doesn't always work.
But your also getting the hardware errors in the log.

Did you try ImgBurn and see if that made a diff? I try that too.

Another thing to try since it's failing burning from the hard drive is check the hard drive - just in case. It's good to do this every so often anyhow.
Run a ChkDsk - can take awhile depending on how filled up the hard drive is and if any errors are found. Here's a guide.

same deal with imgbrn, said some type of reset occurred. if I get one to finish with imgbrn will that playback in my dvd player? you said to use build mode, create and image (iso?) then burn that to disc correct? I'll try ChkDsk as well. I'm pretty sure you're correct about the write strategy too. what should get if I decide to replace this sucker? are external drives dependable? I would rather just plug something in and go from there.

    Yep you did ImgBurn right.
Yes it would play in a dvd player if you can get one to burn - so you're ok there.
Externals are good and reliable. Ones to look at would be LiteOn or Pioneer. if you're in the US check out newegg. Good deals and fast shipping.

    Keep us posted!
