Either a modchip, hdd, or swap method to play backups.

I haven't messed with the hdd method myself, but you basically get your backups onto a hdd, hook it up to your ps2, and play your games off a hdd rather than discs. I would assume this would lower loading times somewhat.
As for the swap method, you will need to purchase SwapMagic v3.3 for about $20-30. You will get a cd and a dvd disc for booting your backups. Basically you put in SwapMagic disc, it prompts you to swap with your backup disc, hit 'X' and your backup loads.
With the swap method, you will have to do/purchase a small mod for your console. There are many different choices:
-for ps2 v1-11: fliptop or slidecard
-for ps2 v12: tape mod, fliptop, slimtool, magic switch, or ghost switch.
