Hi! I keep trying to copy Data DVDs that I've burned with Nero (so as to make a second copy for someone else). It keeps going right to the end and then suddenly fails (someone else on here had a similar problem with CDs. Anyway, I got this log below. Can someone tell me what it says and what I should do?

You are doing "On the Fly" copying. After the option, it is explained that is fairly risky. Try duplicating without that option to see if it helps.

The DMA on the CD drive is turned off, have you tried to get it back on?

Looks like your media is not good quality--get some better stuff.

Your Nero is an older version, try here for an update, both packages

    Package 1:
    http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2:
    http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

You have Roxio installed, it clashes with Nero, to remove, run this zapper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

I would suggest you edit out your serial number at the start of the log

Hi Saltgrass, I've gotten a message regarding the DMA and have tried to change it, but it just won't turn on. Can you give me a step by step way to do it for the benefit of us not so computer versed? Thanks so much.

Hi Gwendolyn, I had a newer version of Nero installed and then my friend suggested I try the older one (which is why I have it) just to see if it works better as the newer one was doing the same thing.

I wonder how I have ROXIO installed as I never installed it. The log says that?

Also Saltgrass, I didn't see where it says "ON THE FLY" copying. Where is that option for me to check off? As you can see I'm totally inexperienced at this! Thanks so much for your help!

When you do a Copy DVD compilation in NeroBurning ROM, on the New Compilation options, Copy Options tab, there is a check box for "Copy on the Fly". I believe this allows the data to be stored on the hard drive first as opposed to trying to write directly from the source to the target.

Hi Gwendolin! Thanks so much! Only my secondary driver was the one that had the "PIO" that your instructions talked about so I uninstalled that only.

I'm trying to download the NERO version you sent, but now it's asking me for a password. What should I do?

Saltgrass thanks so much to you too. I suppose if I download this other NERO I'll no longer see that option to "copy on the fly," correct?

Try using the serial number at the top of your log.

Hi again, I tried all the suggestions you all gave me and they seem to do what you've predicted (except the "On the Fly" thing which I still haven't been able to find). Just tried copying another DVD (that I myself had made)and interestingly it's working much faster but it failed all the same and this is the log I once again got:

You are using poor quality discs and are burning too fast, slow burn to 4X.
I use and recommend Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

Hey Gwendolin, thanks again for your reply. I've actually been using TDK and Memorex, which I wouldn't have thought to be poor quality. I mean, they burn off my hard drive without a problem, they just seem to be unable to copy. I'll also try that 4x you're mentioning. Thanks so much again!

You should edit out your Nero serial number from your posts unless you want to give it away.

It's the long number at the top of your Nero log file:
    A20-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

    Something else:
You are burning way to close to the edge of the disc.

The problem is that when you wrote the original data DVDs they came out this size. Nero runs out of room so you get an error.
And then it stops copying your data because there is no place to put it:
My suggestion would be to copy the data from the disc to a folder and then copy the folder the way the original DVDs were copied.

Hey Gwendolin, boy I tell you, I'm just blown away at how I just can't get to the bottom of this problem. I tried your suggestion to burn at 4x, which I did and it still didn't work. I'm going to try and call my driver's manufacturer tomorrow. See what they tell me.

Thanks for the tip, Fasfrank, I wouldn't have known as I"m not very computer savvy. There again, someone sent me this version of Nero so it's not like I obtained it on my own. I know what you mean by me burning up to the edge of the disk. This last time when I tried what Gwendolin suggested I burned up to 77% and then it suddenly said "error reading data" (which you will see at some point in the log below)and stopped. I tried to copy from a Memorex DVD to a TDK. I can see what Gwendolin's saying about cheaper DVD's, but would it really be THAT picky about the brand? Anyway here's my last log:

I edited my previous post with a suggestion.

Take those Memorex DVDs and bury them somewhere. CMC MAGs are about as bad as you can get. It really does make a difference.

We consider 4464 Mb reasonable for good media, maybe even 4470. We would never recommend going right to the edge of the disc at 4482 Mb. And certainly not with CMC MAG junk. Nero has done that with your original data DVDs so I seriously doubt they can be copied disc to disc.

Like I mentioned previously, copy the data to a folder and then copy the data from the folder to DVD. You may be able to just copy/paste the data from the DVD and let Windows move it to the folder for you. Once you have the data in the folder make copies onto good DVD media.

You have InCD installed still. Try running the InCD CleanTool.
