    Hello,

First of all this problem has caught me by surprise. I recently bought some Taiyo Yuden DVD+R with a printable surface (hub printable) and suddenly I been getting coasters on my Benq 1650. Does anyone think the hub printable disc could be the problem? I seem to have no problem with cheaper media, and I have some Taiyo Yuden with the silver surface that seem to work well. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem and if so do they think the hub printable surface could be the culprit. Thanks in advance to any input.

Are you running up to date firmware in your drive? That would be a good place to start:
Here is the BenQ 1650 firmware page. You didn't list the exact model but it's probably on this page:

I want to thank everyone for their advice. I am thinking that my burner has seen it's last days. I bought it at Newegg for like $45, burned at least 400 dvd's on it, so I think I got my money on it. Just tried to burn another DVD on it, Nero said it was everything was done OK, but when I went to play disc, it was empty. So time to but a new drive but thanks all the same.

    Your welcome Suprk,
Burners are inexpensive nowdays so it makes sense to get a new one every now and then. It also convenient to have a good spare. It sure makes troubleshooting easier if you can swap a burner.
Good luck and hope to see you around.

I would definitly try other options before pulling the 1650. Try cdspeed tests or even put it in another machine to see if it behaves differently. I have 2 1650s and 1 1655 with several burns on them all with no sign of degradation. JMO

only 400 burns!!!! you should be getting 1000s! I have a BenQ 1655 and it's great! over 1500 on that one and I have a Philips 8631 (which is a rebadged BenQ 1620) that have over 1500 on that one and both are still going strong! you shouldn't be having a problem with your burner! I would test out that disk of yours before you give up on your burner.... or at least try another method of burning...... how are you burning your disks and what are you trying to burn...... what is your firmware ....... here that firmware page you need:

Suprk please take note that having a spare burner is what I'm suggesting. Other people have more than one so why shouldn't you?

Still my first suggestion was to make sure your firmware was up to date. Ihoe gave you the link for the correct firmware page.

I've used both types of T-Ys with no difference. Whatever method you are using to burn the silver T-Ys should work with the hub-printable ones.

You never mentioned any burn errors so is this a case of your DVD player not reading the hub-printable DVDs?
Have you tried changing the booktype to DVD ROM?

I believe my firmware is up to date, and I do have another burner. It does not book write, but it works just the same. Below is the log I have from the last few burns I have done. The last DVD I tried to burn said it was successful, yet when I to play the DVD nothing was on the disc, and it appeared to be blank. For the death of me I cannot figure out what is wrong, I am using my Toshiba, but if I cannot find the answer, I can always purchase another burner. Here is my last log, perhaps someone can see something I am missing or doing wrong. The DVD's are being burnt at 4x.

It is very possible those media are incompatible with your drive if they are rated at 16X. TY was late to market with 16X DVD+R media, and not many drive are compatible with them. That happens much more often to CMC, Ritek, and Prodisc--and many people then insist the discs are poor quality. The proof: they update their firmware, switch to Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, and the problems go away. But if the drive was updated, they should have checked the "bad" disc before switching brands to see if it worked. Now TY is stuck in the incompatibility mess and it may not be long before some people start sqawking about TY's "failing quality." Quality and compatibility are two very different things with the same symptoms, and it is easy to confuse the two.

I can see from the log that the burn was started at 3:51:45 at 4X which is about a 14 minute burn. Your error occured at 4:05:54. So this means that the burn time was at 14:09. So it was pretty much done.

Normally with T-Ys you can write out fairly close to the edge but for whatever reason, (See JoeRyan's reply) your burner does not like these particular T-Ys, especially the outer edges of them.

As a test, try setting your target size to 4364 MB and see if finishing the burn before reaching the edge will help. 100Mb reduction will not affect compression that much.

Thank you so much. My memory serving me correct, the errors did all occur at like the last 5% of the burning process. I will give your suggestion a try, and again thanks for all the wonderful help.
