Brand new external DVD writer: Sony DRX-700UL
Came with bundled Nero 6.3.1.12 Sony edition
Have completely failed to get it to burn a DVD
Closest I get is seems to write a header and then fail

Here is the log file from my most recent attempt. Please, can anyone help?

stumbled over this old thread whilst looking for clues for another thread, so made my journey useful and answered this logfile...

    - Nero's too old, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.16, download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php

    - newer version of your firmware is here - http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#700, just look down the page a bit..

    - as your burner is external to the PC, that question mark is ok

    - close down as many programs as you can to free up more memory

    - get decent media, see this -
    - get decent media

    Hehe

Thanks for replying to this. A little too late, but this forum is all about posting info for others to read.

I have learned a great deal of this info over the last year, and now burn perfect DVDs (though crappy media often dies after a few viewings - no problem if I am just using for the kids, where ANY DVD will die - I just make a new copy)

I eventually got that drive working by updating NERO and the drive Firmware. Both supposedly very minor updates (and neither mentioned the other), but it did the trick
