Buying a Japanese PSP for use in North America. Is it worth it?

Well I don't have a PSP and I've been think about getting a white or gold one off of eBay, but because they are all Japanese, they won't play region 1 UMD movies and CDs(which I wouldn't buy anyways). What else do they not do? Can they play region 1 games as good as regular PSPs? And can you mod them? I just want to be sure before I go out and waste like $300.

Why can't they come out with colours here? They have 5-6 different colours there but there's only a black one here :(

Get custom firmware then you will be able to change the region.
