I wanna buy a drive that has dual layer writing for a bit of future proofing aswell as it being quite fast

i have looked at a couple and the one i have seen that are 16X and dual layer is the NEC ND3500A

any advice and suggestions on which others are available??

also why do the DVD drives only burn CDR's at 40X not 52X or whatever

The NEC3500 is an excellent drive.
The Pioneer 108 is also 16X and a dual layer drive. Being a Pioneer fan, that's the one I would go for.
The Plextor is up there with the best but is a bit more expensive. But real quality.

I think the Plextor 712 is the latest.
Nephilim is the one to talk to about these drives.
    He swears by them.

Plextor has yet to release a DL model. The day they do is the day I'll get into the DL game.

As my friend agent-k stated I swear by Plextor drives. I've yet to use a drive that was better built and better performing.

If you're heart is set on a DL burner then I'd give my recommendation to the Pioneer 108. Pioneer, along with Plextor, is about as good as it gets.

One last bit of advice, don't expect great results when burning past 4X :)

I love my Pioneer 108. It can read & burn 7.5gig in about 30 mins.
