I scanned it with Gspot and it says it's a mpeg format video file, AVIcodec says on the video codec tab it's got MPEG1(VCD) and for the audio MP2! but the video has an avi extension?

Maybe whoever made it named it *.avi because of how he plays it back; he can name it whatever he wants...
So rename it *.mpg (it does seem to be a VCD)
ie. I can rename Quicktime or Real files to AVI and then play them with WMP9
    Regards

but the stream will always be quicktime and real media,
if you check the extension it will have like crap.avi.rm

i know matroska will wrap mpeg1/2

No, with Real Alternative (and likewise with Quicktime Alternative) I can rename *.rm to *.avi and WMP will then play it.
