so i have dsl and 2 computers....they are both hooked up to the internet via router...is there any way to access files from one computer to the other or is a router only limited to internet connection?

    Hey

So you have a router, and the internet is currently being shared, therefore they are getting their IP from the Routers DNS.

Now, on the two computers, you need to make sure that they are on the SAME workgroup but a differnt Computer Name.

    Eaisest way

Right click on My Computer then go down and left click Properties.
Click on the Computer Name tab
Now it has To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change. Click on the Change.. button.

Now for computer name, make sure both computers are differnt. eg Persy for Computer 1 and Persy2 for Computer 2, or something like that.

Now make sure there is a tick in the checkbox next to Workgroup, and in workgroup, change it to something like HOME . Now make sure both computers have HOME in that box.

Click on OK and restart your computer.

Now you need to share your C: or what ever you want to share.

So double click on my computer. Right click on C:, then left click Sharing and Security.

Now you need to name the share something, eg C

then click ok, now do to both computers.

    Now it should be shared.

One thing to check to make sure they can communicate to each other.

Click Start then click Run... now type CMD then click Ok

Now type PING Persy2 (from persy) and see if that sends packets, then on Persy2,type PING Persy and see the same.

If you are running a firewall, make sure you add a rule to allow the internal IPs acccess.

Now, just open up My Computer, then in the address bar type \\persy\ that should list all the shares for persy and you can access it from there. Or alternative you can go into My Network Places and clic View Workgroup computers and should see both computers there.
