I am about at the point where I will be picking up a new burner. I want something that will be more reliable. What do people think about plextor 760a. I know it is $$$.

You can checkout the PC Hardware forum, you might pick up some info over there. I personally have used a Pioneer (DVR-109) for about 2 years, hundreds of burns and it's still "purring like a kitten"

    Plextors are good definitely.

Another one to look at is the LiteOn - great drives and in the $30-40 range. Ones to look at 18x speed - LH-18A1P - 16x speed SHW-160P6s. If you're in the US check out newegg.com.

Still might just want to try it in another pc just in case it's a bad cable or power connector.

Thanks for the advice on a new burner. I would really like to keep this one but it seems like it is a no go. I only have a labtop, IBM thinkpad. I don't think I can connect this guy to the IBM. I replaced the ide cable original from Epox with another one and still didn't work. Though my system boots up and says something about no 80 conductor cable on ide 0. I think my old cable is 40 pin. I am not sure what to do next, maybe buy a new one and hope for the best.

Yeah that won't fit in a laptop :)
Could do an external enclosure but that would just an another variable.

In Device manager uninstall the primary ide channel (ide port 0) - reboot and let windows do it's thing and reinstall. That may take care of the message on boot.
A 80 pin will have blue, black and grey connectors - a 40 pin will only have grey.

Got myself a new burner and tried to back up again. Once again I created another coaster. Now this tells me it is not my drive. I still think it is something with XP. The new drive is labeled as DVD-Ram (E:)
When I double click on this drive it opens (same as old drive) even without media inside. In the past, I would get an error message telling me that the drive was not ready, because there is no media in it. When I place DVD +RW/R media in the drive the icon changes to CD Drive (E:). DVD-ROM also shows in the icon. Something is preventing these drives from reading correctly. Any ideas: Here is my latest Nero log:

    Hey jcarroca

Still the same error Power calibration error. I'm not thinking it's an XP issue since even booting up in Linux had a burn fail too with the NEC.
Still looking like a hardware issue - just which one.
Try disconnecting the drives from the power (unplug the power connecter to them) that you aren't using and try a different power connector w/ this drive.

I backed up a movie in linux using k3b with no issues, actually I backed up a movie in +R and +RW format also. Why is this drive acting so weird, when i double click on it, it opens even though there is no media. I will try another power connector, not sure if there are any left though.

You can also try uninstalling the ide channel in device manager - rebooting and letting windows reinstall.

Right click on my computer>properties>hardware>device manager. Right click on the secondary ide channel and pick uninstall. Reboot.

Try another program to burn w/ in Windows. Use ImgBurn. For non iso files use the build mode to burn them.

Will do. I am also purchasing a new 80 pin cable and looking into the possiblility of new power connector. I have used imgburn unsuccesfully in the past. I still don't know why the drive opens without media. Any ideas? I'm thinking if I fix this my problem would go away.

I'd hold off on the power supply for right now unless you did a new one or want to upgrade. I'd try just leaving only the drives needed like the hard drive and the burner connected 1st.

New ide cable isn't a bad idea - good ones are pretty cheap at newegg.

The drive bit has me perplexed - in 1 pc any burner I double click on in device manager gives me the insert disc. Now another pc only does for the burner - the cd/dvd drive doesn't just opens a blank preview window. Same with the laptop - opens a blank preview window. All these are running XPsp2 w/ the latest updates and all drives are working.
So I can make no sense of that right now :)

Here though is a pic of a new w/ a blank inserted - this happens for all drives - normal. Drive D is the pic is a LiteOn SHW-1860P6S

Since this problem starting happening anything else amiss w/ the pc or did anything change?

The only thing that I did probably within the last month was go in the services from admin tools and stop some programs that I didn't think I needed. I did go back to this and tried to place things back to where they were, but not sure that I did this 100%. Anthing in there that may have efected this?

The only thing I can think of is IMAPI CD Burning in admin tools>services. Have it set to either manual or disabled if it's not.
See what your has - maybe you have it set to automatic (this can cause problems) and hopefully switching it will solve this.

Ok - then all is ok there.

Have you tried just having limited drives connected when burning.
One way to rule that out.

Ok, I have managed to burn a couple time by creating iso and burning with imgburn. However, each time there are major errors that effect playback, both happen using DVd decryptor and Imgburn. I/O error, Interpretation: Check condition Sense area:70....... Interpretation: L-EC Uncorrectable error, etc. I can not figure out how to add images , or I would attach the actual jpg. The other thing that is happening, when I eject the disk, pull out the movie, and close it still thinks the movie is still in the drive. Something is fishy about this whole thing. I am about to open the system up and replace the ide cable.

Yeah something is goofy here - just having a hard time pin pointing it.
New ide cable, only having say 2 drives connecting to the power and uninstalling the ide channels in device - rebooting - and letting windows reinstall would be what I would do next.

To add images upload them somewhere like photobucket.com.
Then just copy & the url between these 2 tags (remove the astericks) [*img] & [*/img] or click on the add image icon (above message area when replying)and copy & paste the url between the 2 tags.

Ok, Changed ide cable, uninstalled/reinstalle ide ports in XP now I am burning once again. I am not sure what I did to correct the problem. When I click on the DVD drive and no media is in it it does not allow me to open it, so I think my problem is resolved. Not sure what though. Too many variables. My NEC though was definitely not the issue, looks like I will be ebaying it. Thanks for all the help from this forum. I appreciate it.

    Not a problem jcarroca

Glad the new cable did the trick.

Instead of ebaying the NEC why not add it as a 2nd drive in the pc? Just set it on the slave connection on the secondary ide cable that the LiteOn is on. Set the jumper to salve too.
Might just want to give that a shot. One drive to read - one to write.
