Just to add you're getting a read error from the source disc.
So try cleaning it off with something non abrasive in a non circular motion.

Try the other drive to read from it also. Some drives are better than others at ripping 'bad' spots then others.

From what a can tell you have the latest firmware - looking like the drive is made by BTC.

The HP drive has a max burn speed of 12x for DVD's - so not looking like the same one.

The disc you are trying to copy - what is it like an original dvd, back up copy of maybe a movie or maybe data?

i have 2 drives. the one from the link above and then another emprex burner. however i seem to be geting the same error even if i use the burner as source. i also tried dvd decryptor and have same prob.

    the files are movie files.

Ok if decrypter can't rip them you might not be able to.
When ripping the drive rips every byte while a player may just pass over any 'bad' spots and it may not be noticeable.

What media were they burned on?

    Here's another one to try:
    isobuster.
If it hits a bad spot it will give you the option to insert a dummy sector. One here of there may be ok but if there's more than that would probably affect playback.

Ok are both drives failing to rip the original dvd - the hitachi and the btc/emprex?

You can also try cleaning the lens of the drive(s) - try a dvd lens cleaner or a can of compressed air. Dirty lens can cause read errors.
