Hi I'm new here and I have a problem with burning DVD's (trying to burn films onto DVD's - avi files) that has just frustrated me so much and i have spent the last 3 or 4 days trying to fix but I can't, so I'm hoping that someone here with a lot more computer knowledge than me will be be able to help me. I have read through other threads to try to find an answer but i'm not very knowledgeable about computers so most of what i've read I havn't been able to understand, i really need answers for dummies if possible. Sorry this is going to be a long post but I want to include all the details in the hope that someone can help me. I'll explain: I bought a new computer about 6 weeks ago now, a Dell Dimension E520 which has a Sony DVD+-RW AW-Q160S DDV re-writer and Vista Home Premium. -The first DVD I tried to burn failed, i was using a dvd disk which was probably rubbish, i have no idea of the make, it doesn't say anything on the disk, and i was using windows dvd maker -I then bought some Verbatim DVD+R disks which seem to have a good reputation and had the best reviews, i tried several attempts at burning on windows dvd maker which failed -I went searching on the internet to try and find a fix for the problem, somewhere suggested installing a vista codec pack which i did and windows dvd maker still failed to burn the disk, ejecting at 99% with an error message. -Tried burning with Nero Ultra v7.8.5.0 managed to burn a dvd which works fine and is brilliant so I don't think it is the DVD's, however after doing this i found that with the vista codec pack installed I could not get Windows Media Player to work at all. -I then realised that the vist codec pack said to uninstall any other codecs before installing it so i took all the codecs off my computer and just re-installed the vista package. - Windows media player now worked fine again, however again could not burn DVDS on Nero (I've completely given up on windows dvd player as I don't want to waste disks, and found loads of people on the net saying its awful and doesn't work) -so i thought just take all the codecs off again and re-install all the ones on their in the first place and then just keep installing and uninstalling the vista codec pack every tuime I want to burn a DVD, it would be a pain but at least I would get DVDs burned, so I did that, re-installed, FLAC codecs, AC3filter DivX package and Codec Pack all-in-1 v6.0.3.0, Media Player still working, re-installed vista codec pack to burn a dvd, but it still isn't working, it got further this time with the writing tracks and all that but then popped out the disk at the end and said failed to burn disk. -My conclusion which is probably way off as I don't know much about computers, is that it is a codec problem, i don't have the right codecs, or the right combination of codecs to burn DVD's on Nero, so does anyone know exactly what codecs are needed for Nero? The Vista Codec Pack I was installing contained: AC3 filterm Dscaler (XP 2k3 only), FFDshow components, Filetype Icons, Gabest components, Haali Media Splitter, Quicktime components, RealMedia components and Xvid components. -Also the error report after the last attempt at burning a DVD was this: [11:23:08] NeroVision Log created (Date: 04/17/2007) [11:23:09] NeroVision Processors: 2 (Intel) [11:23:09] NeroVision OS: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition [11:23:09] GCCore Detected DirectX Version 9 or higher [11:23:15] ExpressUI Running Nero Vision Version: 4.9.5.7 [11:23:16] AMCDocBase Nero3D interface version is 300 [11:23:16] GCCore Detected DirectX Version: 10.0 [11:23:18] DVDEngine C:\PROGRAM FILES\NERO\NERO 7\NERO VISION\DVDENGINE.DLL [11:23:18] DVDEngine Product Version: 4.9.1.4, File Version: 4.9.1.6, Interface Version: 4.10.0.1 [11:23:18] DVDEngine C:\PROGRAM FILES\NERO\NERO 7\NERO VISION\DVDENGINE.DLL [11:23:18] DVDEngine Product Version: 4.9.1.4, File Version: 4.9.1.6, Interface Version: 4.10.0.1 [11:23:18] DVDEngine C:\PROGRAM FILES\NERO\NERO 7\NERO VISION\DVDENGINE.DLL [11:23:18] DVDEngine Product Version: 4.9.1.4, File Version: 4.9.1.6, Interface Version: 4.10.0.1 [11:23:18] DVDEngine BEGIN: IDVDEngineManagerImpl - CreateDVDVideoSession [11:23:18] DVDEngine END: IDVDEngineManagerImpl - CreateDVDVideoSession [11:23:18] DVDEngine BEGIN: IDVDSessionBaseImpl - RegisterApplicationService [11:23:18] DVDEngine ..Application service registered... Hi. Try lowering your burn/write speed to 4X. 16X is just too fast for many setups. If codecs were a problem, Nero would have generated an error before attemting to burn. The DMA (direct memory access) mode is off on your burner. Use Device Manager to uninstall the burner. The operating system should automatically reinstall it upon startup in DMA mode upon restarting the system. Here's a guide for WinXP. I guess Vista should be similar. (I'm not using Vista myself yet. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 The above device driver can cause problems with Nero sometimes. If you're not using any Roxio software like Easy Media Creator, use the Roxio Zapper to remove it: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061
Thanks for such a quick response. Right, I can lower the burn/write speed no problem. I am a little wary aout the uninstalling the burner stuff but if it's going to fix the problem then I am happy, the only problem is that I can't follow the guide you gave, i got as far as selecting IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager, went to do that but there isn't an option for that so I am a bit stuck. Is there any other way to do it, do I just go straight to the DVD/CD-ROM drives option and just uninstall the burner without checking the IDE channels seeing as I can't find them or are they just hidden somewhere, i did look under all the other options but could not find them? I really don't want to mess up my computer, I'm scared of breaking it lol. Also I have Roxio Creator DE so that Roxio Zap thing would get rid of that wouldn't it? Is there any other way of removing that driver? and also I can't find where it is hiding on my computer to remove it from. Thanks.
Hello again. Resetting DMA in Vista: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1712831&postcount=6 If you want to keep and use the Roxio software, then leave the Roxio CDRAL driver alone. It is a hidden file and it's best to use the linked zapper software to remove it, if need be. I wouldn't worry about it unless you continue to have problems. Let us know how you make out after resetting the DMA mode.
I tried to follow those instructions as well but I don't seem to be able to access the IDE controller thingies, they just aren't in the device manager where they should be apparently, I have also checked under each of the other device manager sections and they just aren't there as you can see; I tried uninstalling the burner and re-installing it, tried burning another disk and it failed again. It spends ages encoding, writes the lead in and gets to about 70% of the writing process on average and then pops out the disk and comes up with an error message. I also tried using that Roxio Zap thingy as I don't use the Roxio stuff, it doesn't let me burn DVD's either (won't even let me add video files let alone burn them) and it hasn't seemed to do anything at all, all my Roxio stuff is still there and I don't know how to tell if the driver thing is still thereor not.
I'm guessing you probably don't have any IDE controllers. Look under the category Storage Controllers and tell us what's there. If you look at the latest section of your Nero History file and don't see this near the end, it's been removed: [12:11:37] NeroVision File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS': Ver=8.0.0.212 , size=2560 bytes, created 24/07/2006 04:00:00
Here's what it says under storage controllers: And I'm not sure if i've found the history log or not, i googled it and found that it should be located at: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt however I got to Core and there was no nero history file, the only thing i did find was one just called Nero.txt which I opened and seemed to contain a lot of info about all the errors which means nothing to me but maybe it is the right thing and maybe it will help, here it is: [SectorVerify] 10=Sectors from %d to %d on disc are different to source 11=Sector %d on disc has different content to source 20=Read errors from sector %d to %d 21=Read error at sector %d 30=Audio data readable but not comparable 100=Audio-verify runs with read/write-offset of %d samples [APM] 0=No Error 1=Nero - Burnprocess 2=Nero is currently accesssing a disc. You have SATA drives and not IDE drives which is why there was no IDE controllers to be found. Open the Intel RAID SATA Controller and see what the settings are. It seems as though you may have been trying to burn on DL disks? is this correct? It seems you have a version of Nero lite that came with your system. It is less than fully functional. There may be problems converting AVIs. With all the changing around you did prior, I think we have a mess w/r to the operating system. In the end you may need to reformat and reinstall. Let's try this first. Go back to the earliest restore point you have and try. Use the Nero image recorder as your target output device and create a Nero nrg image file. Burn that in a separate step with Nero or ImgBurn. Have you tried just backing up one of the DVDs you own? Can you get a burn doing that? Are the problems only related to converting AVIs?
I checked out the SATA controller thingy: Not sure what dl disks are but i'm using Verbatim 16x 4.7GB/120min DVD+R disks, this is pretty much all the info on the packaging, is a 25pack spindle, also says advanced AZ0+ but as I said in my first post I did manage to get one disk to burn correctly and well. I have no idea how to do any of this, is there a guide you could link me to or just give a bit more specific instructions? Sorry to be a pain. Haven't tried this yet, not entirely sure how to copy dvds but a friend told me just to google it and find a guide so i will definately try this. Thanks.
Guides: http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/Guides.htm To use the Nero image recorder, just select Image Recorder instead of your DVD burner as the output device/recorder. Nero will not burn a DVD but instead will create an exact digital image (nrg file) of how the DVD will appear when burned. In Nerovision on the last page/window where the Write button is located, in the upper write under the Burn to: menu, select Image Recoder. To burn the image using Nero Express, select Disk Image as the project type, make sure your DVD burner is selected in the Recorder menu, select the Nero nrg image file, set the write speed, and burn. Using ImgBurn, make sure the mode is set to write, select the Nero nrg image file as the Source and your DVD burner as the Destination. http://www.imgburn.com For help with the System Restore, select help and enter the term system restore. Note: you may need to reinstall some software if you go back to the earliest restore point. Basically most software you installed yourself will likely need to be reinstalled.
Right I will try that right away, however would it be easier just to uninstall and then re-install nero completely? That seems to make a bit of sense to me, but if this is a better way of doing it then thats fine. Thanks.
Also I just tried the system restore thing and it only gives me 3 resore options 2 of which have todays date on and the other which has yesterdays date on so surely they wouldn't go far enough back to solve any problems? Thanks.
The system restore was to go back to a point when your OS was virgin/undisturbed. You can of course uninstall Nero, run the Nero 7 Clean Tool, the Driver Clean Tool, and then reinstall Nero. You should run the Clean Tools anytime you uninstall Nero before reinstalling. http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html
The System restore won't let me go any further back than yesterday so i uninstalled Nero, rebooted, ran the clean tool and rebooted again. I'm currently re-installing Nero however, in between installing my version which is not compatable with Vista and the upgrade from the Nero website to a version that is compatible with Vista I got this message: "Nero ProductSetup - Installation cannot create necessary temporary files in folder ‘C:\Users\Beth\AppData\Local\Temp\NeroDemo0500\Cab\Tmp’. Please check if you have write permission for this folder." Thinking back now I remember that the same message came up the first time I installed the program but I carried on and everything seemed ok so i thought nothing of it. Do you think this caused a problem in any way that affected Nero and will happen again? And if so is there any way around it as I should have access to the file as i am the computer administrator. Thanks.
I'm installing version 7.0.8.2 then have to install the version 7.8.5.0 udgrade for it to work on Vista.
Laddyboy you are a legend!!!! and i so wanted to use all caps for that but as i am so pleased about getting another disk to burn but i thought i'd better not in case someone tells me off for shouting. I tried what you suggested: and it worked!!!! yay! So will I have to burn every disk I want burning in 2 stages like this now or had the reinstalling worked and it should work normally too now? Also the only thing with the burned disk (and I apologise as i really am just being fussy now) but when I tried the disk in the DVD player downstairs as we have a big widescreen TV the film played in the middle and ther was a big black space all the way around it, do you know if it will do the same on a normal non-widescreen TV and if there is anyway of making it fill the whole screen? Thanks.
From your description it sounds like a 4:3 letterboxed title. In other words, it's been mastered to fit in the 4:3 aspect ratio. On the usual nonWS TV there will be bars top and bottom but the sides will be filled. On a widescreen TV 16:9, there will be bars on the left and right as well because of the 4:3 aspect ratio. Usually, most widescreen TVs have zoom features which should allow you to fill more of the screen. If it's not been mastered in 4:3, there may be a problem with your DVD player or TV settings. Edit: text added below When using Nerovision I'd recommend always doing the AVI conversion and burning in separate steps. The reason for this is if the burn goes bad you won't have to redo the project from scratch. The conversion itself is done and the results contained in the image file. It also gives one the opportunity to play the image file to see if the conversion was successful before burning. Nero ImageDrive can be used to mount the image as a virtual DVD, as can Alcohol120%, Daemon Tools, and Slysoft's freebie Virtual Clone Drive. I believe VLC Player can play image files directly without mounting as virtual DVDs.
Ok well Nero was set to automatic for that, I'm guessing it's better just to leave it on that for best playability on all kinds of Tv's? Thanks.
I tried burning one in just the one step earlier just as an experiment and it worked fine so the reinstalling must have worked, however I might just carry on burning in 2 steps to stop wasting any more dvds. Thanks for all your help!!!!
