you have a dell dimension 3000 desktop computer. http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/a...ktops/dimension-3000_owner's manual_en-us.pdf
that manual I linked does not show any sata data connectors on the motherboard which is a problem for you as all optical drives are now sata not ide as your current drives are. check to see if any of your local computer stores might have an ide dvd drive still in stock but don't count on it.

that computer is about 7 plus yrs old because of xp, ide connectors with no sata, Pentium 4 type cpu & a dvd rom drive as the now standard optical drive is a dvd rw. how much did you pay for that computer?

been around for a few years especially as computer manufacturers don't always put an internal optical drive into new laptops & maybe desktops. desktops can still have an internal optical put in but some laptop are not design to have 1 put in so that is where an external comes in.
