I have an .avi file that when viewed is square format. However it's blatantly obvious that it should be viewed in 4:3 if not 16:9.
I've tried using a video converter and altering both the aspect and the video size. However while this has an impact on the size of the movie window, adding black bars to the sides, the actual viewable part of the video doesn't change, it's still square.
Does anyone know why I can't change it?

    belay that No 1!!
I somehow seem to have found the answer by setting arbitrary sizes in the custom setting of Freemake video converter and have finally got it spot on. :)

Where do you play the transcoded video? I know some media player will allow user to change the playback aspect ratio.
