There is a dip switch on the chip, it has 4 possible settings.

    Matrix Mode Dip Switch Settings

MODE Description Dip Switch 1 Dip Switch 2
    1 Test/Disable ------ ON ------- ON
    2 Always On --------- OFF ------ ON
    3 Swap Mode -------- ON ------- OFF
    4 Write Enable ------- OFF -------- OFF

yeah you'd have to open the box every time you wanted to change the modes. and adding switches does require soldering but it is really easy, all you need to solder is to the outer legs of the dip switches and they are big compared to the rest of the stuff in there.

yes as far as i know you'll be ok on live, until they start chcking for HDD serial numbers. I dont play live so you'll probably need to do some searching for some good info on that.
