I had a new ps2 (50001 v9) for not even a week and it died . I was using maxell 650mb cd-r and some cheap 50¢ dvd-r media which some worked, some didnt and some loaded VERY slowly. since I already had a swap magic cd/dvd I used them and swapped the disc by removing the cd drive cover each time. the swap magic cd loaded with a garbled playstation 2 logo but the games still loaded and appeared fine. The dvd worked without the logo messing up. After about a week it just stopped working and said no data and it would read nothing.

All back-up media strains the laser and slowly wears it out. Versions 1-3 have the older weaker lasers and show the most wear.

My old laser used to really struggle more with CDR media.

Use Ritek G-04 DVD-R if you want to be safest.

it sounds like you got a crappy ps2. I'd return it for a new one.

I would also stick with the Ritek G04's....they have worked great for me, and I don't have any laser problems.
