Hi there people new member here (newbie) and need your guys help!!

I have been researching about modding my xbox360 for a couple
of weeks now and have nearly made my mind up that i am going
to flash my drive rather than modchip it!

I am in leaning towards flashing as it seems quicker and alot
easyer than wiring a chip in! What i want to do is open my 360
chip it or flash it close it up and forget about it!
(playing my backup games to my hearts content while keeping
    my original games safe)

the questions i need answering are simply these :-

1.can i flash my drive with the latest firmware at the time of
flashing and just leave it at that and play backups without
the need of updating the firmware as i have no intreast in
    playing on xbox live?

2.My friend who is a hugh fan of xbox live will undoubtely
want to flash his 360 if my goes without a hitch
(fingers crossed).I understand you must keep your firmware
up to date to avoid being banned from xbox live this meaning
continuously flashing your 360 which is what i want to avoid.
But we do borrow each others games every now and again and
will proberly cotinue to do so with our backups
(naughty i know) but if he has backed up his games with
newer firmware then mine wil his backups work on my 360
as i will have older firmware due to not being intreasted
    in xbox live?

3.So heres the biggie!! CHIP OR FLASH?

4.Chips i have been reading up on are the XENO360 and the
NME360 v1.2 i dont see alot of difference between the two
so if you guys point me in the direction of chip expext
another monster post from me asking XENO360 OR NME360?

Sorry for being such a long winded pain in the ass be your guys input would be hugely helpful and greatly appreciated!!
Look foward to hearing from anyone who can help me!!!!

Welcome dude, nice to see A nice clear post explaing what you're after, thats what we like to see here, makes a change from the old ' help me mod my box'

    Answers to your questions

    1. = Yes. if not using live then you do not need to update to the latest firmware to play backups.

    2. = You will still be able to play his games but he may not be able to play older backups depending on what stealth checks come out in the future. This is not definate and it should be fine.

    3. = Flash! its so easy and if your pc has the right sata card then its free! If you do need to buy the sata card that will only set you back about £15

    4. = I have no idea about any chips as all my knowledge goes into keeping up to date with flashing the firmware.

    Thanx Grunt and Thanx Shinnster!!!

I am not a newbie to the modding scene i have modded a xbox and
modded a Wii with the wiikey! so i think i will be able to do either
a chip or the flash i was just not sure about which was the best road
    to take.
And i am not keen on having to keep flashing the firmware but if i
am ok to flash just the once and leave it at that (not going to be going on xbox live) thats the road i think i will take!!.

Just a couple more questions guys!!

1.I have heard of people saying there firmware flash has gone
funny or broken down after 2 or 3 months how is this possible?
surely if its flashed properly with the right firmware it should
be fine untill you decide to update the firmware or flash the
    original back onto the drive!!!
Have you guys heard or come across this?

2.Could you explain stealth checks and why would it stop you
    playing older backups

3.Does the firmware flash have any effect on the network side of
things because i often lan up on games with friends?

Sorry to be a pain guys but you guys have really helped me on my
way and i will be more then happy to help if you guys want any info
on the Wii or the Wiikey!!
    Thanx alot Grunt!!
    Thanx alot Shinnster!!

I have never had anything go wrong with a firmware flash, once its done its fine until you decide to update it. They may have been problems with games not loading due to bad disks etc (if using cheap media then after a while a game may not load everytime or the laser on the drive will get worn out due to having to work so hard)
but as I say, i havent experienced this yet.

Stealth schecks are mainly for newer firmware and using xbox live. When the bannings happend a few months back the firmware makers realised that microsoft checked certain things on the disk so if your back up was npt stealthed properly then microsoft could see it and log it. On the new firmware if a game does not have all the correct files then the game will not load. This is an unstealthed game. These games will still work on older firmwares, xtremem 5.3 backwards I believe. So to have a fully stealthed game it needs to have the security sector, PFI, DMI & video file in the right places. That game will then be stealthed, which just means it looks like the original if microsoft checked.

The flash does not have any effect on the network side, i still hook up to lan parties as well as live with my console and all works fine :)

    hope this helps dude.

    Cheers Shinnster!!!

Shinnster do you have a samsung drive or a hitachi drive??
Because i have heard you have to put the hitachi drive into flashing
mode before you can flash it?
plus aswell do you know of anyone who has had the three red lights
    of death from over heating?

    I have the samsung ms25 but have flashed Hitachi's (46 & 47) as well.
you do have to put them in flashing mode (mode B) first but that is easy with the 2 wire trick.

And I had the 3 red lights happen to me yesterday, but I done the Xclamp replacement today and my console now works fine.

mine has not over heated yet so i am thinking fit a extra fan in the case and sort out the thermal paste and hopfully that will prevent it
    from ever happening!!!!!
