What are the specs on your computer? Hard drive speed, capacity? RAM? Processor? If it is only slow on startup, you might want to cut some of that crap you have running out, such as Google Toolbar or that DVD program that's booting a process, for example. You can also try to find a program that will clean and defrag your registry, depending on how bad it is that could help. Defrag your hard drive too.

Issue- the fact that your computer runs with 70 mb ram free and you're using a chunk of virtual memory the size of 2gb. Your hard drive moves data at a fraction of the speed that RAM moves data, so all that noise you hear at the beginning is probably your hard drive being used as a virtual memory source. Since you have two hard drives, move your paging file to the second hard drive, to keep it free from the other hard drive that you use to boot from, run programs, etc. I'd recommend more RAM for a relatively inexpensive and considerable speed boost.

dvdsndict is correct you need to defrag the harddrive, do this by right clicking "control panel" and open, look for "performance and maintenance" ,(if you see a list of icons instead look just below the forward and back arrows for "switch to category view") there are two things you need to do ,the first is clik on "free up space on your hard disk" a window will appear with drive C clik "OK" and let it run then clik OK once it's finished analyzing (that window will disappear once job is done) ,next just below the free up space is "rearrange items on your hard disk to make progs run faster" when the window appears clik on drive c and then clik defrag

for a safe registry cleaner if your not comfortable with ccleaner is toniarts easy cleaner, this ware is free (free as in no charge at all) and safe and will create it's own save file in case you need to undo changes,it also has a one button clik for doing cookies etc

dvdsndict ,the 2nd drive is what HP uses to house the recovery partition it would be better to either make a 2nd extended partition for the pagefile or better stil just reduce the size to around 1 Gig or whatever size ,usually around 800MB i think it is,i've got mine at 1.5GB ,i also agree with the ram issue 1GB should do it 2 sticks of 512MB and as long as the hdd runs at 7200rpm it should be bloody quick unles it's a 5400rpm model in which case get a faster hdd

right clik "my computer" clik on "properties" clik "advanced" tab, in the performance box clik "settings" when the next window appears clik "advanced" ,now your looking at 3 columns ,the bottom is the pagefile changing area, the top two make sure the dots are in the "programs" this will give more power to foreground apps rather than background, once that's done reset the page file to around 800MB min andd 1GB max

I also use Registry Booster from Uniblue Systems. Instead of using the defrag that comes with Windows (cause its complete crap), I use a program called Power Defrag http://www.powerdefrag.com/. Its a free 30 day trial and it works much better.

Please be more specific. Which program were you using? What sort of system error did you encounter?

this slows your pc, an onboard video it takes your system ram , add more ram or an external video card provided you have pcie slot in your mobo.

Windows can't defrag all files. Some files may be in use by the system at time of defrag (which is what Power Defrag attempts to bypass by rebooting the system and immediately defraging), there are alot of reasons Windows cant move all the files on your hard drive around. What does the error say?

Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 is the culprit. The PcScnSrv.exe process is killing my machine as well. Supposedly if you tweak Spybot S&D by un-immunizing everything (not uninstalling Spybot) and then deleting the usrwl.dat file in the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007 folder(See Solution ID:1033903 at the Trend Micro Site), the issue should go away. But this "fix" did nothing for me.

    Good Luck.
