Connect Philips DVP5960 to external hard drive?

    I have this dvd player and it has a usb slot where you can play movies off your memory stick. I am planning on getting a Western Digital My Book 500GB Essential USB2.0 External Hard Drive, would I beable to play movies off this?

    Also the dvd player says it is hdmi, what is this? I havent got a hd tv, is it any use to me?

    before you can use the hard drive it has to be formatted also that usb is an input so how are you going to put the movies on the HD?

    I have movies currently on my laptop which I am going to transfer to the HD via usb. Is it hard to format it to input? sorry I am newbie and not familiar with these things.

    the hard drive should have come with a disc for formating
