    Hi,
I'm very new to this and need some help. I have several home movies that are on DVDs (they have vob and ifo extensions). I need to convert this to some format (not sure if what I need is avi)in order to edit it with an editing program so that I can then put some of it on youtube. Any help about what I want to convert it to and any advise on an editing program would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrea

If you want cheap, here's freeware to convert VOB (dvd) files to AVI (mp4).

    VOB_01_1.VOB
    VOB_01_2.VOB,
etc files can be loaded into VirtualDub-MPEG2, clips selected and saved as mp4.

Download the required files and install the codecs.
VirtualDub runs out of it's folder - there is no installation required.

Run VirtualDub and drag a .VOB file onto the window.

Use the slide bar to select the area you want to save and use the black arrow, marking tools to select start and end frames.
The marked area will turn blue under the slide bar.

Click 'Video' > 'Full Processing mode' > 'Compression' and select the 'XviD' codec then 'ok'
    Click 'Audio' > 'Full processing mode' > 'Compression' > 'Lame mp3' > 48000 128 CBR Stereo 'ok'
Click 'File' > 'Save as AVI', give the file a name and wait for it to convert the clip.
You can reset the slide bar and continue clipping.
