I have been trying to encode several avi files into vcd and svcd compatible mpegs and have run into a problem. No matter if I use Tmpgenc or Ulead DVD Factory I get the same result, after encoding I can get sound ok, but there is no video. All I get is a black screen.
I have divx 5 pro installed. I also just downloaded the divx 3.11 alpha codecs and they made no difference. I downloaded KingJohns codec test files from vcdhelp.com all played fine appart from Huffymp3 and Xvidmp3.
I am almost certain it is a codec problem, but since I am a svcd/vcd newbie I thought I better ask some more experienced people before I go and download every codec I can find and no doubt screwing my system completely.
    Any help gratefully appreciated.

Some silly questions to help us determine if you are making a mistake:

1 The movie plays OK when you run it as an avi??

2 You can preview it in TMPGEnc?

3 You have changed the environmental settings in TMPGEnc?

4 You usually have no problems with VCD when ripping?

Answers, and I am confident I am making a mistake! :)

    1. yep the movies all play fine in the original avi format

    2. Preview in Tmpgenc does not work with most avi's, however those it does work with encode fine.

    3. I havent fiddled with environment settings, they are default since install

    4. no problems usually

In enrironmental settings you could try increasing the priority of your avi readers. Remember your settings and try increasing them. You can always go back afterwards if it messes things up.

    That might work.
