You can get this Free ripper and get the smaller file size depending on setting. For example AVI will be smaller than MP4
    https://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/
Output videos & audios MP4, H.264, AVI, MPEG, WMV, FLV, MOV, MP3, etc.

Size of dvd output depends on the amount of compression applied to the rip by the default "SETTING" of the program that rips it.A 5Gb file output suggests compression is being applied.Assuming you want to increase the file/s to a more natural state as like on a dual layer movie dvd then you need to change the "settings" of the rip program to dual layer or use a custom setting of 9,000mb =9gb.
More compression = less quality video.
For ideal quality. Rip the dvd movie only & that includes trimming front & end credits/crap before ripping (dvdshrink is best for that last bit).

Shrink is the DVD ripper of choice for AD. It is free, easy to use and relatively flexible. Not many complain that they have trouble with something as simple as shrink. Did you read the guide?
