What do you need to rip a DVD movie to an .avi file?

Read some of the guides in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/.
Careful: DVD2AVI won't add sound to the mpeg. Do not use it.

I prefer extrcting the movie and converting in VCD form as written in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm and THEN compressing it(DivX 'Portable Profile' at the maximum bitrate (768). Choose 'slow' in the DivX settings.)
My opinion is: it's better a perfectly-compressed VCD movie (352x240/288) than a 700x400 movie compressed with a low bitrate (e.g. 700/4000 for the 'Home Theater Profile' of DivX).
