Anyone know why for some parts of a DVD, the compression slider can only be compressed to, say 70%, while for other areas, the slider goes down to 30% or so?

Soundtracks can't be compressed with your average compression programs. The data is initially compressed to fit DVD-9 as it is, you can only compress it so much after that without ruining the integrity of the video.

If you want to compress a disc even more, rather than burn after you have compressed it run the compressed file through shrink again.(This is not recomended).
