Might be bad luck, bad edition, whatever.

Disc: Datawrite "Red label" 4x DVD-R
    Writer: Pioneer A05

    Tested so far: 5 discs
    Problems:

Out of five burned discs (normal way how I burn DVD-Video discs: UDF compliance on with Nero 5.x, data verification enabled) three have so far failed validation and one I didn't test (image write), so that leaves only one well-working disc out of five. The read errors occured in mid-disc and -- as usual with cheapos -- at the end of the disc. Unacceptable quality and I still have 45 of these, sigh..

Datawrite reds are only really good for making leaning towers out of. Even the datawrite 4x yellows are hot stuff, though they do have a tendency to work more often thatn not. Datawrite have finally gone back to the Ritek Dye with their latest white/silver top 4x Ritek G04's, however, i for one am sticking with my ever reliant Traxdata Riteks!

I've not had any probs with datawrite red tops up until last week.

Have succesfully burnt 80+ disc but lately recordnow and nero both fail copying movies from my hard disk at 4x 2x & 1x I've tried other types of 4x -r media and these seem to fail around about 25% for no reason I get a write error fault and both nero and record now spit out the disc .

If I copy the same to +r , +rw or -rw it works fine.

If I copy -r media on the fly this also fails.
for the same reason at the same point.

But copies ok if the source media is +r +rw or-rw.

    Any ideas !!!

Windows XP , Sony DRU510a (with latest firmware), Dvd Decrypter, DVD2One 1.2.3, Recordnow Max v4.5, Nero 6

I admit the media is a mixed bag , some people think their great others think their really poor.

But since the problems I am having don't seem to be due to the make of media but more the media type DVD-r, also I noticed one that failed today had black spots burnt in to the written surface before the disc failed !!!

I'm returning the drive anyway as when playing dvd's on it the picture is very corrupt and blocky. I just want to know if the problem when burning is with the drive itself

    Additional info on these discs.

Now I've burned through the 50-pack spindle of these and the failure rate was:

-24 of the discs failed in validation process.
-Out of remaining 26, 10 had severe issues when played with Pioneer 454, typically at the last 20% of the disc/movie macroblocks, etc.

Media code for the disc: PRINCO

    Full media code:

With that kind of failure rate, isn't it better to just pay more & buy some reliable-burning Ritek-dye discs instead. Cheap discs but a false saving of time & money.

I've had some wierd issues with Nero's (6.0.0.15) data verification.

About 1 in 3 times it will tell me that one or more files are different. I use Ritek media, so I checked the discs and guess what? Absolutely no playback issues whatsoever.

    Using a Pioneer A05, Athlon 1200 (old), 384MB PC133 on a KT7A with Win2k3 Server, Nero 6.0.0.15 (recently upped to 6.0.0.19).

A lot of my burning is done from files across a network.

Datawrite redtop PRINCO works good on Pioneer DVR-106 with firmware 1.07. The amount of errors do not increase at all near the edge of the disc....(do with most other writers and with the old v1.05 firmware).

The new redtop v2 discs made by INFOSMART is also very good in the DVR-106.

I guess it depends on the writer and firmware.....

dRD - That was really to be expected. From what Mr Yang is hinting at, most datawrites are not grade A and the Datawrite Ritek are something around the Grade D overprint. My guess is not to use the Datawrite brand as a whole, though they are the most bought and very cheap. If yo have a near 50% failure rate, by paying less than 50% more you can save on time and effort and have a 100% success rate with Traxdata and Clone Disc Ritek.

I agree the Red Tops are crap in a Sony but the Grey Top 2x speed are great, I have used loads of them with 100% success rate, but they are being phased out, I bought 75 from Bigpockets.co.uk at a great price 65p each!
And not one coaster!, still got 15 Red Tops, stopped using them after making 10 coasters....crap
