direct coding an avi to vcd? how is this done with Nero?

well, the subject pretty much says it all.
I'd like to keep the high quality avi intact and simply burn it to a SVCD that will be readable in any vcd/svcd/dvd reader/player.

can this be done without first having to convert to mpeg-2 and still keep the filesize low enough to fit a single vcd?

    HELP!

Maintaining 'quality' depends on the quality of the avis you are working with. SVCD specifies 480x480 video at 2.6Mbps, so that's all you have to work with. Anyway, I hear that Nero's encoder sucks. So if I were you, I would use tmpgenc to encode a short section of the avi to mpeg2 (using the svcd template) and throw that into Nero. See if the result is acceptable to you, before you go all the way.
