Discoloured sections of a used dvd. Flawed?

Hi there! I recently purchased a used copy of LOTR: Fellowship. The four disc, more stuff then you can possibly care about, set. While I was backing up the second disc with both Dvd Decrypter and Dvd Shrink I came across an error near the end of the disc. When I checked the disc to see if it needed cleaning, I noticed a streak of discolouration on the film. I remember seeing this before on one of my other dvds but I've never come across any problems prior to this. Could this be giving me the errors or is it something else? Was the disc poorly pressed or can this occur over time?

Sounds like the disc is burnt. It happens when the DVD is paused for along time and the laser is scanning the same track time and time again untill it heats up and burns the DVD.

I wouldn't buy second-hand DVD's unless you can check this discs first!

You could be right. However, There was one instance when I've purchased a brand new dvd only to find out it too had this flaw. It played fine for a month but then I did notice breakdown in the digital video stream. Anywho (God I hate that word), I've since had the dvd replaced and the new disc looks fine. Thanks for the info.
