here is what I use, have found great success with
    Philips :
    Ritek dvd +r and -r
Sony (OEM type or retail) dvd+r and -r
(I havent tried cdr discs on philips)
(also , in my opinion, the philips drive is the easiest and most sucessful to "tweak" - ie laser pot alignment)

    Samsung:
Just about ANY dvd-r, and some unbranded or cheap brand +r, weird though that most brands dont work for +r (I believe ritek DO work though)
Memorex dvd-r work especially well with samsung drives
memorex cdr cdrw work well too
Samsung, like most xbox drives, does not like dvd-rw (only +rw)
Ive also been able to play just about ALL cdr cdrw in my own samsung

    Thompson:
Compusa, memorex, and quite a few dvd-r work well
(sony maxell etc and again ritek, they rock)
Thompson does play certain dvd+r too, but has a lot of problems with cd media, it also seems that thompson is more picky from xbox to xbox

The best discs I found for the money were on ebay, SONY OEM about $35-$40 for 50, shipped
never once lost a disc with them.

    Hope it helped a bit
