My friends can play my normal (un-purple) disks on their ps2's.

I too am confused after reading your post.
Are you saying that your PS2 won't read orginal games, only DVD-R game backups?
Your PS2 has a mod of some type?

Did you or someone increase the current to the laser using the DVD pot?

I think that you are trying to say that you cant play original dvd's and if that is the case it is most liekly the lens

    "purple bottom" =cd game
    "un purple" = dvd game

    Hey do u have a version 4?

I have the same problem..it plays only cd-based games. I think it has to do with the laser and it might be burned out or sumthing. I heard that the version 4 has a poor laser and it happens to people, like me.

    wassup..
hmm.. i have a similar type problem or question.

my buddy gave me a broken ps2 version 1 (yup, first generation). it kept getting read errors when he tried to play games and dvds.
however, being a bit bored and a geek, i decided to try to fix it myself.

I opened up the ps2, removed all the wires/connections and messed with the dvd tray and its placement (it sounded like it was grinding the discs).

tried an original dvd movie, it plays; tried a backup dvd+r (disk error).
tried a music cd (original and burned), disk error.

decided to get more indepth and tweaked the voltage for the cd, oh yea! it reads both original and burned cd-r's.

tried to do the same with the dvd pot tweak, same result, got all my backup dvd videos playing.

i don't have any ps2 games yet, can i assume that this once broken ps2 is fixed or do ps2's play video dvds and still not play game dvds?

    thanks for the time
    peace

When you say you adjusted the voltage via the pots are you refering to this procesure?

    http://www.megagames.com/ps2/ps2_laser_calibration.shtml

My V3PAL has problems with DVDr which I would just love to solve. I have a couple of DVD backups. One works but I usually have to reset 3-5 times to get it to boot. Same with the other cept that screws up while playing.

I was hoping that some adjustment might do the trick.

    Advise please ... :)

Sounds like your laser needs cleaning or replacement
