divx xvid?

    This might be a stupid question, but what is the difference between xvid and divx? My computer burns divx movies, but most searches come up with more xvid than divx.

    Well in terms of video codecs, they are both MPEG-4 Part 2 video codecs. DivX is also a container format hacked/based on avi.

    All scene releases are Xvid which is why most files online are compressed with it.

    In term of cost, the XviD codec is free but instead the DivX one must be bought, to have the COmpression capability. For free, if gives you only the DECoding capability (reading DivX files).
    Many DVD pleyers read DivX AVI but don't play XviD ones (but you can 'trick' the DVD player - with Nero or Nic's FourCC changer - making it think it has a DivX file, while it reads a XviD one).
