    That 2nd diagram you linked to isn't very useful. It doesn't label any of the contact points. The points in question on the first diagram will work fine.

    but if i put the chip behind/near the ribbon cable for the controllers, the wires to points a & b will be very long wont they? or is that ok?

    DMS recommends placing the chip between those two contacts so that they will both be as short as possible. As you can probably see though, this will necessitate that the rest of the wires be quite lengthy but that's what they recommend.
