I belong to several online music groups from which i receive songs by email every day. I want to put my favorites on CD for my use only, and have NERO to burn with, A friend of mine said to use the data setting to do this, is this correct, and why?

you need to be a little more specific as to what
means. do you want to burn these files from your computer to a disc that you can play in a standard audio cd player? or do you just want to store the digital music files on the disc itself and use it for storage of files?

I wish to use them in a CD player at home and my vehicle.
