Just to be clear, are you using Nero Vision 4 or Nero Express to convert the AVI to DVD?

Should you not be using Nerovision Express to convert an AVI file?

When you drag the AVI file on to GSpot, press buttons 1 and 2 and verify that the file plays ok...and both video and audio codecs are installed.

Assuming you have Nero Vision 4
    Start Nero Vision 4
'Make DVD' > 'DVD Video' > 'Add Video Files'
Locate and open the AVI then proceed to the burning stage.
