I only heard it stands for Dynamic Network Authentication System, but how exactly does it work, and is there then any possible way to make downloaded games work online?

yes you can play games downloaded online. Just search for the disk id of the game, and patch the iso image before burning the disk. there are serveral programs that allow you to do this. google dnas patching.
