DSM Chip...PSX backups?

I've having a problem playing some PSX backup games on my PS2 with the DSM chip. I get a red screen that shows a phone number on the screen it is kind of hard to make out. I'm guessing it is some sort of protection. On my old PS One the backups work fine but I want the convenience of playing them all on one system. The games I'm having trouble with are Japanese Import backups (Pop N Music 6 , DDR best hits, 4th, 5th). It's funny because PS2 games are simple to backup why are the older PSX games not utilizing the chip? Can I use a gameshark or something.

I know about holding down the O button during the boot. Some older PSX games work others have that red screen. The original imports work but not the backups.
