Physically DVD-R and +R are the same. The differences lie in the way the blanks are formatted for recording. The official recordable DVD format is DVD-R/RW, and DVD-RAM. This is what some companies (like Pioneer, Panasonic and Apple) push for. Since it is the official format you find the DVD logo on said blanks. But some companies (notably Philips) thought the kind of formatting there was inefficient, etc. So they came up with another blank DVD format and decided to call it DVD+R/RW. Philips extoll the virtues of +R/RW by saying it offers "lossless linking" (where you can successively add videos to a blank DVD+RW and in between while it's not yet filled you can watch on another conventional DVD-player whatever is recorded so far: this goes against the finalizing requirement in -R), and "faster formatting and erasing", among other supposed advantages. Because +R/RW is NOT the official recordable DVD format the DVD logo is not found on the blanks; rather, you merely see "RW". In any case, after the recording is made (of a DVD-video or a DVD-ROM collection of files), the + and - distinction is gone and the player or drive where the disc is inserted could hardly care less if it once was a DVD-R or a DVD+R. DVD+RW does offer a little benefit over DVD-R (apart from the mentioned) in that the slowest recording speed (on a PC drive) is 2.4x, as opposed to more common x1 and x2 DVD-RW. These little differences are not significant to the point where one should be swayed exclusively to either, so that dual-format drives have become the recent rage, and IMHO, should be a deciding factor when thinking of buying a DVD writer.

From the capacity, the DVD can be divided into such kinds: DVD5, DVD9, DVD10 and DVD18, with the respective capacities of 4.7GB, 8.5GB, 9.4GB and 17GB. DVD9 is one of the format

DVD uses the VBR format of MPEG2 to compress the images, it is the compression of dynamic alterable data stream, ranging from 1m to 9.8m, the biggest data streamed can reach 10.8m. It has great difference from the previous VCD. VCd uses the CBR format, the data stream is static, the length of the recorded film to every disc is also fixed. But the length of the recorded film to the DVD canbe changeable, the smaller the data stream is, the longer the recorded time is, on the contrary, it is the same. And this is the main reason why the quality of DVD9 is better than the DVD5.

Prsently, the DVD9 has the advantage of DVD5 as followings,

      1. With mass storage and high image and graphic quality. The capacity of DVD9 is double DVD5’s. To the equal length film, DVD9 can adopt the big data stream to compress, which guarantees the image and graphic’s quality. However, to contain the whole film, DVD5 can only diminution the data stream, this depress the quality of image and graphic. Generally speaking, if a DVD5 disc contains the film of 100 minutes, the quality of image and graphic can be insured. Although the theoretical stardard of DVD is 133 minutes, it also depends on the quality of the raw materials. As far as it goes, the DVD is not popularised in China, the materials are mostly the things of VCD years. So the quality of 133 minutes do not reach the standard of DVD. And the capaity of DVD9 accords with the facts of China. To gain bigger capacity, it can increase the data stream to make up for the shortcoming of the raw materials, provide you a real feeling of DVD.
      2. Technology advanced and protecting copyright. No matter in program produce or disc manufacture, the content of technology is fairly high. The technic of production has matured. At present, in the pirate market, mostly are the DVD5. And the production od DVD9 is far more complicatedd thant the DVD5, the error can not appear in every step during the whole course . Now, there remains a problem in the testing of DVD9, the DVD-R can master the DVD5, but DVD9 can not. So the testing will be more complicated and the time-spending will be longer. And the technology of mastering and compression of the DVD9 is not mature, only a few manufacturer can do, comparatively, the producer of the DVD5 are of a good number.
      3. Abundant content of program. Genreallly speaking, the DVD5 is somewhat monotonous, and do not reach many functions of the DVD standard. Comparing with the VCD, the DVD5 only get improvementin quality, no more fuctions. And the DVD9 adds some authentic functions of DVD, including multi-lingual, multi-caption, multi-angle, etc, these make the customers feel the real excellence of DVD.
      4. High quality. The quality of DVD9 is higher than the DVD5. DVD5 uses the gold as the reflection layer. In appearance, the DVD9 is golden, while the DVD5 is silver.

    DVD-r
A DVD Format (the industry body that controls the development of DVD formats) approved recordable DVD format. Format allows single-layer data to be stored on each side of the disc -- in other words, one side of the disc can hold upto 4.38 gigabytes of information.
    DVD+r
A propietary recordable DVD format, developed by DVD+RW Alliance. Format currently (10/2003) allows single-layer data to be stored on each side of the disc.

    DVD-5
DVD-5 is an acronym that means a DVD disc that is one-sided single-layer disc and can contain upto 4.38 gigabytes of data on it.

    DVD-9
One form of DVD discs that means a single-sided dual-layer DVD disc. DVD-9 can hold approximately 7.95 gigabytes of data.
