It burned DVDs fine before I reformatted my computer but after I did so, it won't let me burn data DVD's (even though I am using the same brand DVDs - TDK), although I can read CDs/DVDs fine. I'm getting the "Could not perform end of Disc-At-Once" error right when starting the burn phase. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Nero, used all the clean tools, etc. but I keep getting the same message. Any help would be appreciated. Here's my log file, if that even helps. Thanks a lot!

    Hey Whoa, welcome to aD,

Try using Nero Burning ROM instead of Express -

Also, lower your DVD Target size down to 4300MB to se if that helps -

Here's a guide for burning with Nero 6 ROM in German

I apologize that it's written in German -

    [/b]HINT:
First, create zee folder for your work on your desktop OR somewhere on your HD where you can find it again. - Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (all in Caps) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it's contents in order to work properly -

Burning a file made by zee DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use the "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don't use Nero's Wizard), trace your path back to C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. , you don't have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished, ready to go - -

OK zen, is everyone comfy ? Goot - its now time for - -
"Uncle" ScubaPete's German, goose Step by goose Step, Let's burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
    Please follow EXACTLY -
Vhen you open Nero Burning ROM, you vill be at zee "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either zee DVD or zee CD, choose zee "DVD". Directly under that click on zee "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT zee main screen.
You now are in zee "DVD Video" window. In zee left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In zee "File Browser" screen, 3rd from zee left, trace your path to zee VIDEO_TS folder, zee one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in zee right screen. Click on zee top file, hold down zee "Shift" key and then click zee bottom file thereby hi-lighting zee entire column of files. Click and (holding zee left mouse button down) drag zee entire column of files to zee open screen, second from zee left and release zee mouse button. Now click zee icon on zee task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click "OK" and now, clear zee room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STAND AWAY FROM ZEE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from zee Computer. Do not fold spindle or mutilate and never mess vid zee electron box vhen it's working - it could be hazardous to your health, Commander Jason is watching -
Go and have your coffee, vhen Nero is done, zee electronic wonder box vill let you know ;-))

    Enjoy your backup,

    Pete

Wow, thanks a lot for all that info. However, the main problem I am having is to burn data on a DVD rather than dvd video files (.vob, etc.). So I mean stuff like .avi, .mp3, etc. That's when I get the error message. I will however use that method to burn DVDs in the future (including one I am doing now). Thanks a lot, once again.

The reason you're getting that error is you are trying to burn files that aren't DVD compliant.

Even if those files got to a disc nothing would play them properly. The files you have must be rendered (changed) so that they will be accepted.

For your AVI's use DivxToDVD -

    http://www.vso-software.fr/download.htm

For your MPG's you'll probably need TMPGEnc DVD Author -

    http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/tmpg-dvdauthor.htm

You can use NeroVision too if you have it but the first 2 proggys are better.

You might wish to take this as a lesson about posting - word your posts more accurately so we'll have an idea what you need -

Thanks for the help. But how was I able to burn .avi files onto a DVD before I reformatted my computer without any problem? My computer could read them and I could watch ~4.3 gigs of video files on my computer, or backup my music collection off my hard drive. It worked fine before but burning the same type of things now causes these error messages...

I'm talking about using the DVD as a data storage disc, not as a dvd video disc. That was my main problem. I think I will have no problem actually burning dvd files with the advice you gave me on the 2nd post :)

    alright. Good news, bad news.

I finally figured out the problem. The DVD's I am using are TDK DVD+R 8x. That's why it wasn't working properly. The DVDs I originally used (before reformatting) are TDK DVD+R 4x. This supposed negligible difference caused all the problems! I barely even noticed the difference b/c the DVD looks the same, but I tried a 4x and burned with Nero express without a problem. YAY! But a problem now arises - why the heck does the 8x not burn properly while the 4x is the only one that does?

I mean, few brands have actually worked with my burner. It's extremely restricted in the types of DVDs it can use. Why can't it just burn the 8x dvd at 4x speed so both types of DVDs act the same. Doesn't make sense. THis sucks...I spent $50 on a 100 pack of these from ebay so it's going to be trouble returning them. What an annoyance

    Whoa,

Some suggestions to help in eliminating errors and going for the "Best burn" ~

When attempting to achieve the best burn, consider reducing that burn speed to the 4X area. Iffin you have a new 16X, DL burner, you'll probably do well at 6X. It is my feeling that 8X and over leads to occasional coasters, even when using top grade stuff such as Verbatim DataLife Plus media.

The second part of the solution is to always use a decent grade media. I suggest something like those discs made by Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, Mitsubishi or RICOH. Unfortunately they are also the discs most plagued by pirate Mfgrs. and for that reason I like dealing with Mertline, Supermediastore OR Newegg who have a great return policy on their products. I have had great luck with Ritek, RiData and Verbatim DataLife Plus discs and their prices are extremely reasonable.[/b] As a passing note, when buying Verbatim's, they come with a lifetime warrantee. Return them with your sales slip OR register receipt and a new one will be shipped to replace it.

For the best online media stores to shop, try -

    Mertline.com
    http://meritline.com/

    Newegg.com
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-344&depa=0

    And,

    Supermediastore.com
    http://www.supermediastore.com/media1.html

    Hope that helps,

    Pete

    Whoa,

I have thesame problem, I can not use 8x blanks in my Amilo M7400. Everytime I tried to burn files with Nero express using DVD+R 8X media errors came out such as illegal disc, burn process failed etc.
Did you find any solution to solve this problem? Please share it with me. I just bought 25 pcs of 8X blanks and now I wondered if I could use it.

the only solution I found is to use 4x DVD's. I could not get the 8x DVDs to burn regardless of what I did

    Gentlemen,

It's not the speed of the disc, it's the brand AND what speed you're using to burn them.

If you're buying TDK, Verbatim OR Taiyo Yuden's, fine. As I said before, burn at 4X not 8X.

That sure does suck. They have been selling Taiyo Yuden's 4X -R discs for $ .24ea ($24.00 / 100) online for the last 3 weeks. Verbatim DataLife PLUS for under $.45ea AND Ridata & Verbatim DataLife for $.36ea. Quality doesn't cost much if you just lQQk :)

    Cheers,

    Pete

I tried setting it to 4x burn speed (which is the highest number available so it was dby default set on "Max", but that didn't work. Gave me the same message.

me too. I tried TDK and Verbatim 8X dvds, set it to 4X but it didn't work. I think DVD+RW RW8165 recorder does not support 8X media.

I have the same DVD+RW on AMILO L6825 and i had problem recording on DVD+R medias (i got Illegal Disc on 33% of recording state for DVD+R). Problem was solved after i installed Adaptec ASPI drivers. But now on some media i got areas that can not be readed! I can record only on TDK 4x media without any problem. Nero Info Tool for TDK gives information that it is Ricoh media.
I noticed that DVD is hot even without any activity on it. Maybe something is heating it, but i need experience from other user of RW8165. If RW8165 heats it self then maybe my DVD is faulty?!

    Always check the following,

    1. Firmware
    2. ASPI Layer
    3. Make sure your internal burner is set to Master on the secondary IDE cable
    4. Make sure you have 80-wire NOT 40-wire IDE cable.
    5. Make sure your laser lens is clean. Clean by air OR cleaning disc.
    6. Make sure all drivers and O/S are up-to-date.
    7. HD's are defraged
    8. Run a registry cleaner every month

    FINALLY, THE BIG 3,
    1. Use quality media
    2. Set your DVD Target size to a max of "Custom", 4360MB
    3. Burn at 4X

That should take care of 95% of all of your problems.

    Cheers,

    Pete

Well, all of mentioned notes are fullfilled. On quality media i can write without any problems, but if i use cheaper media that can be written on other DVD recorders i got bad DVD when i record it on Ricoh RW8165 DVD recorder.

I have the same problem i am using a dvd200i (SUCKS) and i just purchased 16x media and i get the same exact error that you got with nero. Disc at once error. Same thing here everything works fine then ----Reformat and error however before i was using 2.4x dvds and i would have never thought that "up to 16x" wouldn't work you would think that anything under this would work....It sucks wasting money on this stuff. I will try this if you find another solution let me know. By the way upgraded firmware, aspi, xp, software (nero), tried everything (even the method above and still didn't work) I will try to use a slower disk.

Hi simce & byhova, welcome to our little corner of the "Net",

For starters, let's begin using DVD RW media so that you don't create more coasters (didn't know you weren't using them)

Next, this is important, every problem, even though it souunds the same, is different because pple use different proggys, different media, are ripping different DVD's AND every PC is different.

byhova, I see you have provided some info, as you're using Nero, let's have you post your Nero log and answer all the questions you haven't yet answered.

Simce, you need to get bust and provide us with some major info -

Here's a list guys, answer the questions -
LQQk, This is an example of the type of information we need, fill in as much as you can ~ it's all important ~

What are your PC's specs ?

What programs are you using ?

    To rip ?
    To edit ?
    To Burn ?

What Guide OR Guides are you using ?

Was there an error ? What exactly did the error say ?

Exactly where were you and what are you doing when your error occurred ?

IMPORTANT: Do you have an error log and can you post it ?

What is the name of the DVD you are trying to backup ?

Is your media clean and free of "smudges", "scratches" and fingerprints ?

Is it a download or a rip ?

What type of media are you using ?
(Of major importance if you're having any trouble writing to, reading from OR burning to your disc.)

When was your last Disk Defrag ?
If you have to think about it, it's been far too long.
You need to do it now ! ! !

Have you tried checking your burning basics ?

Are you operating in the PIO or DMA transfer mode ?

Have you flashed your Firmware ?

Do you have a working ASPI layer ?

What is your burner's IDE location ?

What are your burner's Jumper settings ?

Have you updated all your OS updates ? i.e. If you're running XP, do you have SP2 and all the updates for it loaded onboard ?

Have you checked all of your PC's programs to be sure they have all of their drivers and versions updated ? Even if they aren't burning related ? We never know what's important and there's no time like the present :)

If you are using Nero, are you using Nero's Burning ROM ?
    Using Nero Express ?

Do you have any Roxio products installed on your PC ?

Handy tools to help you find out about your PC ~

To check firmware, at the bottom of the page look for "What's my firmware? - Try this little tool I found," Download this tool and check out your firmware. There are also some firmware updates at this site.

@evnflow - i've done same kind of thing too, i post incessantly, mostly saying the same things every day so knocked up a few stock questions/piccies for the constant stream of problems. 'When will it end' i sometimes think, but hey it keeps us off the streets!
