I am finding the inconsistencies of DVD burning for viewing on external DVD players to be absolutely maddening. Let me explain:

I use a variety of DVD media, + and -, which are fine with my onboard
burner and OK with the external ones, as well. Sometimes I use Nero's latest, generally "Vision," but lately I've been using DivX to burn movie-length files as "data." This worked fine--for a while--then it stopped working. I tried alternating software, using both apps (Nero and DivX data)but to no avail.

I had found that avi files will play on my external players so I could save the time of transcoding, and I felt the results were better, anyway. I use XP. The media are Sony and Memorex (i.e., 2.4x, 8.5MG), although the results defy distinction among them.

I have absolutely no problem burning CDs, however, and burning DVD's the shorter 4.7).

    Can anybody figure this out??

    Many thanks.
