I’m having a problem with my DVD/CD read drive. In the past month it has stopped recognizing any disk in it. My two drives are D: Samsung DVD-ROM SD 616E (Read drive) and E: NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A (Burner drive). My DVD software for reading DVDs are Real Play, Windows Media Player, Media Center 2004 (uses Sonic), MCtr, Magix Media Manager, Power DVD, Video LAN VLC Media Player, Sonic Cine Player and Quick Time Player. All DVDs and CDs play perfectly using my E Drive with any of the software mentioned but when in the D drive, the following message comes up “Please insert disk into drive D”. I’ve tried replacing Drive D with a brand new drive from CompUSA but the results haven’t changed. Ripping and burning are not a problem using one drive but I'd like to get both drives up and running. Is there anyone who can help solve my problem?

I tried registry scan and the drive still does not recognize any DVD that is inserted in it.

I checked out the DMA mode by following the instructions on the link. The drive still does not see the DVD. I'm open to all forms of help.

Try setting your computer as far back as possible w/
    System Restore.
    Reformat?

I would like to but my restore dates don't go back far enough.

Reformat may be your only option but before you do that could you please run the Nero InfoTool? This little program will gather a bunch of info about how your PC is set up and give us something to work with. You don't need Nero installed to use it.
It will look similar to this after you run it:

When you post it it will be a big txt file with system info on it.

Thanks for the suggestions but it was the drive after all. I replaced the Samsung DVD-ROM SD616E with a Sony DVD-ROM DDU1615 and the problem was solved. It was a good thing I took a 4-year hardware policy from Dell when I bought my computer because a tech came to my house and replaced the defective unit.
