I have two almost identical PC's:
    IntelP4 1.7 Gig / 1 Gig DDR RAM / Asus P4P800-SE Mobo./ Maxtor 7,200 80Gig HD.

    Only difference:
One PC has a Plextor PX-712A internal ATAPI and the other has a Plextor PX-712SA internal SATA Drive.

The read rate (while ripping) of the PX-712A is 1.7X and that of the PX-712SA is as much as 6.0X.

    Question:
What steps do I have to take in order to increase the read rate of the PX-712A above 1.7X?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

Check to make sure that your ide channels are set to dma and not pio mode.

I have the same problem with my Plextor PX-712A internal ATAPI. I could not get the reading speed above 1.6X

Bluto1940 suggested "to make sure the ide channels are set to dma and not pio mode."
but how to get there (ide channels)?.

I am still stuck with 1.6X maximum reading speed.

    Thanks for your help

Hey bluto, voltron, hyvong and greenbird ... thanks for your interest!!!

The problem DID, after all, lie with the DMA/PIO setting of the PC with the Plextor 712A DVD burner.

After changing cables, moving jumpers around and cursing the entire world, I finally telephoned Plextor TechSup, who immediately informed me that the culprit was the MoBo, and that I would have to sort this out with the MoBo manufacturer, ASUS. It seems that Plextor has known about this problem for some time now.

TechSup at ASUS were very helpful (I give them 5 stars) and after about 45 minutes they determined that my BIOS was shot, and that I would have to install it anew. In addition, they also recommended that I update the driver for the INTEL chip.

Since ASUS has provided it's MoBo users with the ability to download / update / repair, etc., BIOS and other programs from their website, I was able to do what their TechSup suggested and replaced my shot BIOS with the latest version as well as updating the driver for the INTEL chip.

I did the updating job for the other PC and now have the SATA drive reading at almost 8x and the ATA one reading at 7x!

    Have a GREAT DAY Y'ALL !!!!!

    mangomax,
I believed I found the solution. It worked great for me. The ripping speed went from 1.6X maximum to 10.5X. It took about 5 minutes to rip a 50-minute DVD.
I simply updated my Plextor PX-712A (1.03) driver with firmware version 1.05.
You can go to this website to download the firmware.

    Good luck

    hi

    1, use the latest firmware!

    2, use a hacked firmware!

    3, read below...

    Problem:
My Plextor DVD Writer wont read above 2x and I've already checked the DMA settings.

    Answer:
Plextor DVD Writers are locked to 2x when reading CSS protected discs.

You can enable the 'SpeedRead' feature by performing the following short procedure:

    1. Remove any discs from the drive and close the tray.
    2. Press and hold the eject button (for approx 3 seconds) until the green light flashes (it will do this 3 times).
    3. Release the eject button to eject the tray.
    4. Insert your disc and close the tray.

If you do it right, you'll be able to rip at proper speeds.

Please note, you must do this for EVERY disc you want to rip at full speed.

    Update:
Newer versions of DVD Decrypter will automatically enable 'SpeedRead' on Plextor DVD Writers when you start ripping the disc. Just ensure that if you own a PX-708A, you have the most up-to-date firmware installed on the drive. This is important because older versions have a bug in them that stop this from working.

    1. Downloaded the latest BIOS update for the MoBo from the German Asus website (the US website is totally unreliable)
    2. Downloaded and installed the latest Plextor firmware for the 712 (version 1.05)
    3. "Enabled" speed read as per your (Rotary) instructions.
    4. "Updated" DVD Decrypter (Vers. 3.5.2.0).. Thx hvyong!
    5. Confirmed that the primary as well as the secondary settings of the IDE were set to Ultra DMA (http://www.tweakxp.com/tweak178.aspx)

Present top read speeds now, are:
    Plextor 712A ATAPI = 11+
    Plextor 712A SATA = 11.5+

Once again, thanks to all who answered my "SOS"!!!!
