OK, I've found several threads with this topic, but most taper off to say "use better media" or "your dvd drive is bad".

I use Taio Yuden DVDs exclusively. My DVD burner is a BenQ 1655. I have made dozens of working DVDs with this combo, using Nero 6, DVDCrypt, DVDShrink in various combinations. Now, all of a sudden, when I write a blank DVD using either Nero or ImgBurn, I cannot read the resulting disc. Many times, Nero reports a successful burn, sometimes it reports a write failure. Write speed seems not an issue, as I have used 2.4x, 4x, 8x, and even 16x getting "success" reports. I have tried removing INCD from my system (Windows XP), but that seems to make no difference.

Want a typical Nero log entry? Here:

So, I am going nuts with more than 12 coasters at this point, using different burn pgms and speeds. What is not understood is that my system worked perfectly until about 3 weeks ago. As Curly (of the 3 Stooges) once said: "What Happened!?"

Oh yeah, a little more data for you:

I have a Panasonic 80MB HDD / DVD recorder attached to my TV set (about 4 years old and working just fine).

Sometimes, if I try to put one of the "successful" coasters into this unit, I get a message that reads: "Incorrect region, cannot play disc."

Of course, the region coding was removed from the video tracks before burining, so something is really munged here....
